Asana, Pranayama and Meditation (Maggie)
Asana practice strengthens the back and purifies the body systems, preparing the body and mind to sit quietly and focus on the breath in pranayama. Focusing on the breath further calms and directs the mind, preparing it for meditation. In this class we will spend an hour with asana to prepare for simple pranayama techniques leading to meditation.
This class is suitable for anyone with six months experience in asana and a desire to experience the deep mind (citta) more intimately.
h2.Yoga Sutra Class (Maggie)
Held at 129 Bates Avenue
The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali is the classic yoga text, defining the state of yoga and giving guidelines for the practice of yoga and integration into daily life. In this class, we chant portions of the Sutra in Sanskrit, learning it through the time-honored method of “listen and repeat”. We also take one or two of the sutras and explore their meaning, and how the sutra can help us in our journey. Chanting focuses the mind, trains the ear, improves memory, raises energy and mood, and resonates in the heart. No prior experience necessary. All are welcome.
Summer Morning Yoga (Beth)
Greet the day with yoga! This class will be a vigorous, accessible flow of standing postures designed to stretch, tonify and strengthen the body for a full day. After the standing series we will move to the floor for an effective sequence of low-back and abdominal energizers. After a brief rest, we will integrate the asana practice in a seated ratio-breathing (pranayama) sequence followed by meditation. There will be time for written reflection and clarifying your intentions for the day. All in one focused, joyous hour!
Level I: Viniyoga Rooting and Rising (Beth)
In this class, students will learn and integrate Viniyoga’s three foundational practices: 1) breath as support for all asanas (postures), based in the actual, natural physiology of breathing; 2) breath-based repetition of asanas in preparation for staying in them with greater ease and awareness; 3) adaptation and variation of postures in relation to each person’s unique physical needs. This class is well-suited for yoga beginners, people who say they’re “too stiff,” yoga students new to viniyoga, and returning yogis. In the course of an 8-week session, we will focus on breath and basic asanas. We also will begin to explore pranayama (breath modulation), meditation and simple tenets of yoga philosophy.
Level II: Viniyoga for a Vital Life (Beth)
Students in Level II will develop deeper yogic connections among breath, awareness and movement, through more challenging asanas and pranayama practices. Each class, as always, will respond to the needs of students on a long-term and daily basis. Emphasis on skeletal alignment, muscle actions and antagonisms, and organ support will encourage deeper levels of students' knowledge about their bodies and their yoga practice. Practices such as chanting and mantra will be used occasionally to intensify and enrich students' experience of yoga.
